Walk 1. Inchgarth Reservoir Loop

Walk 1. Inchgarth Reservoir Loop

Summary

A short level walk, on a private tarmac road round the reservoir at first, then on to the river via a narrow earth path, which can be muddy; the path that continues down river and back across to the wood is narrow, rough, uneven and can be overgrown in summer. Please park with care as large vehicles need access at all times to the reservoir.

Directions

Start from the gated entrance to Inchgarth Reservoir, where there are often gulls, swans and several types of duck in winter, such as wigeon and goldeneye, and bear left along the tarmac road. At the far end of the reservoir there is an open wetland area which is a former. Access to the river path is through a narrow path to the left just before the gates to the reservoir buildings. It is worth going down the broom-lined (also some gorse!) path to the river bank for the lovely views of the Dee, even if you decide to retrace your steps from there rather than continuing on the path down river.

From the river head downstream - taking care as the bank is eroded in places; the path then enters a wooded area. On the further side of the river is a mainly shingle island. Approximately the end of the island the path divides. Turn left in-land. There is a waymarker on a birch tree (see photo). Once you reach the base of the steep wooded bank turn left along a pleasant wood lined track and another signpost will indicate when to re-join the tarmac road around the reservoir
