This annual event has been organised by CBMCC for many years. The CC owns Christmas lights which it deploys each year on the trees and shrubbery in the bed opposite the Cults Hotel. This makes a festive backdrop to the community carol singing event usually held on the first Monday evening in December. Song sheets are provided for a donation which, over the past few years has been given to Voluntary Services Aberdeen, VSA. Ministers from the local churches conduct the proceedings. Music is provided by the Bon Accord Silver Band and public singing is augmented by the Morven Singers and Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside Members who also help with stewardship of the event.
A highlight of the event at “half time” is hot soup provided by the Cults Hotel and hot mince pies, which in previous years had been provided by Kelly’s of Cults but which for the past two years have been provided by Sainsbury’s Local and heated by Cults Parish Church members at the Hub Cafe.
CBMCC support to VSA over the years by virtue of the donations raised at this event led in 2015 to VSA nominating CBMCC for its Community Group Award for Charitable fundraisng. Derek Robb, who coordinated the Carol Event over the previous two years collected the shield on behalf of CBMCC from the ACC Lord Provost and Fiona Kennedy.
Fiona was so impressed with the effort that she attended the 2015 Carol Event and sang a couple of solos. She also attended the 2016 event and roused the audience with renditions tailored with local content. This year the event raised a magnificent £557 for VSA.
